Merry Vaughan
Although Orgon is wealthy and should have everything going for him, he’s highly insecure. As his family grows more and more independent, Orgon relies more and more on the pious Tartuffe. Tartuffe, a less than scrupulous con man, inserts himself into the household and soon becomes the only voice Orgon respects. Tartuffe uses this trust to try to marry Orgon’s daughter, seduce his wife, and steal the deed to his property. Despite the interference from family and servants, Orgon holds steady in his devotion to Tartuffe. Comedy ensues and the audience goes along on a delightful ride as they are swept up in the web of deceit as only Moliere, translated by Richard Wilbur, can weave it.
