About the Show
March 11 – April 2, 2023
Written by Brian Grandison in collaboration with Melvin Carter Jr.; Directed by Warren C. Bowles
1950s-1970s. The story of Melvin Carter Jr., born and raised in St. Paul’s Rondo neighborhood, begins at a time of racial tension in the 1950s and 1960s. During this time he struggles in school, questions his worth, and turns to fighting and trouble in the neighborhood. This play, inspired by Melvin Carter, Jr.’s book, DIESEL HEART, is a story that has you crying and laughing with joy. Melvin’s story reminds us that the journey we take to finding our voice is never clean or straightforward.
