Free gallery admission 10 am–5 pm; family activities 10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission tickets are available online and on-site on the event day from the Main Lobby desk; quantities are limited. In-person programming will be documented with photography. By attending, you consent to have your image documented. COVID-19 Protocol: Masks are optional but encouraged for visitors. Some programs may have specific COVID-19 requirements, which will be listed on the program webpage and email. What do we carry within us and pass along through our family and community bonds? Connect with stories of origin, self and culture through the work of visiting filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin (Abenaki) and a reading of the new children’s book Where We Come From with the authors Diane Wilson, Sun Yung Shin, Shannon Gibney and John Coy, who explore personal histories and what unites all of us as humans.
A program in the Walker Cinema honors Obomsawin, an artist and prolific filmmaker whose career has continually celebrated and advocated for Indigenous life, children and future generations. Obomsawin will introduce a special selection of her short films at 1 pm. More of the artist’s documentary portraits preserving Indigenous cultures will be on view in the Mediatheque throughout the day.
Free First Saturday features free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month. Gallery admission tickets are available in advance online and on-site on the event day from the Main Lobby desk; quantities are limited. Free admission 10 am–5 pm; activities 10 am–3 pm.

After returning to her Minneapolis roots, April Dakota is excited to open a wellness center on Franklin Avenue to serve the Indigenous community in the heart of her hometown. She’s counting on a grant from the Franklin Avenue Task Force, but the competition is fierce and her proposal is rejected. Desperate to keep her dream alive, she partners with Esme, a non-Indigenous woman who uses April’s revolutionary ideas for her own gain. But the Task Force pulls together to defend their treasured Franklin Avenue and fight for the future of their community. Drawing on Minneapolis’ rich Dakota and Ojibwe heritage, this Guthrie-commissioned world premiere comedy examines the myriad facets of contemporary Native life.
